This course is intended for those who routinely analyze samples. Laboratory personnel learn to identify all the asbestos fibers, their substitutes and look-a-likes more accurately and efficiently through a review of the basic theory, as well as inclusion of more advanced methods. This course emphasizes refractive index measurements; interpretation of dispersion staining colors; and alternative dispersion staining methods (critical darkfield and phase/pol). Also included are various sample preparation techniques including gravimetric methods, small particles, complex matrices and chemically and heat-altered samples. Students must analyze complex samples and demonstrate proficiency with more advanced sample preparation and identification techniques.
